Citation metrics and other statistics related to usage are used to evaluate the significance and impact of individual journals. The statistics help librarians select which journals to subscribe to and help authors decide where to submit their manuscripts. The journal impact factor "is probably the most well-established metric that's out there," according to Susan King, senior vice president in the journals publishing group at the American Chemical Society, which publishes C&EN.
